The incident took place in Stamford in Mianus River Park around 8:50 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 5.
The woman, identified as Melissa Tiefer, of Greenwich, was found after a person walking in the park early in the morning noticed her lying on a blanket off a trail and not moving, said Assistant Chief Richard Conklin, of the Stamford Police.
The person called out to the woman and she did not move so they called 911 and officers responded, Conklin said.
When officers arrived they found Tiefer dead on the blanket, Conklin added.
During an investigation, officers found a large amount of heroin and fentanyl packaged for sale in her belongings, the chief said.
Although detectives are awaiting autopsy and toxicology results for a definitive cause of death, Conklin said "unfortunately, it most likely a drug overdose."
Because of the large police and EMS response, Conklin wanted to assure the public there was no reason for concern and the park and trail have been reopened.
